Stalin urges PM Modi to withdraw CUET for admission in all central universities

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Wednesday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to withdraw the “regressive and undesirable” rule that requires Common University Entrance Test (CUET) for undergraduate program in all central universities.

“There is no doubt that this CUET, similar to NEET, will shore up diverse schooling systems across the country, reduce the relevance of holistic development-oriented long-term education in schools and make students rely on coaching centers for their improvement. . Marks of Entrance Test,” reads the letter sent by CM Stalin to PM Modi.

He further raised the concern that since the CUET exam is based on the NCERT syllabus, it will harm students who have studied in state boards and come from marginalized families.

“I would like to reiterate that no entrance test based on NCERT syllabus will provide equal opportunity to all the students who have studied in different state board syllabus across the country. In most of the states, more than 80 per cent students of state board syllabus of the total student population and these students always come from marginalized sections. Hence an NCERT curriculum based entrance test would put this deserving majority in a disadvantageous position in securing admission in central universities,” reads the letter.

He further added that there will be a huge shortage of students in Central Universities from Tamil Nadu due to the above factors from CUET exam.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) on Wednesday directed central universities to use only the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) for admission to Under Graduate (UG) programmes.

The application process for CUET 2022 will start from today. According to the official information bulletin, the three-and-a-half-hour computer-based entrance test will have only multiple choice questions based on the content of Class 12 NCERT textbooks. CUET will compulsorily have three parts. Students will be marked negatively for wrong answers.

The CUET 2022 exam is scheduled to be held in the first and second week of July 2022. However, no scheduled date has been announced by the NTA yet. The date will be announced soon on the official website of CUET – cuet.samarth.ac.in – or the website of NTA – nta.ac.in.
