West Bengal Education Minister Bratya Basu on Monday clarified that the state government will not give jobs to every job seeker who opposes the School Service Commission (SSC) recruitment scam.

“It can’t be that everyone is protesting [against the State government] Job will be given. There is no connection between protest and jobs. Appointments are given on the basis of merit,” Mr Basu said.

Speaking to a private television news channel, the minister said that not all those who passed JEE exam came to engineering colleges nor did those who passed UGC-NET got jobs as teachers in colleges.

Mr Basu said there was “negativity” against the state government, and it was being portrayed as if the protesters were right, the opposition parties were right, the judiciary was definitely right and the state government was at fault. The Minister expressed hope that soon the problem of teacher recruitment would be resolved with the intervention of the Calcutta High Court.
