States should not remain mute spectators on Mekedatu issue: Farmers

The strong stand of the central government on this issue can deprive the state of rights over Cauvery water.

The farmers of the delta have asked the Tamil Nadu government to stop the Karnataka government’s intention to seize Cauvery water by building a dam at Mekedatu at an early stage.

The state government should not remain a mute spectator to the current developments as it used to be when the upper coastal state built more dams apart from the main Krishnaraja Sagar Dam. He claimed that in the present scenario, any inaction on the part of Tamil Nadu would pave the way for conversion of Cauvery delta area in Tamil Nadu into rainfed cultivable area.

Participating in a demonstration organized by the Cauvery Rights Recovery Committee along with various farmers’ unions of the region, the farmers of the delta expressed their regret over Chief Minister MK Stalin’s silence on Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai’s recent statement. Karnataka proposes to build a dam on river Kaveri at Mekedatu.

Speaking to the media at the protest site, committee chairman P. Maniarasan recalled how in the past the upper river state had built Kabini, Hemavati and Herangi dams in the Cauvery basin without the consent of Tamil Nadu as well as the central government. ,

Alleging that a similar position could be repeated with the adamant stand taken by the Central Government and other central agencies on the issue, he called upon the Tamil Nadu government to register a protest against the Mekedatu resolution at the outset instead of registering it. . Assignment or Project.

Referring to the justification of the project by the Chief Minister of Karnataka on the grounds that it would help store surplus water during good monsoon, Mr. Manirasan said that whenever the entire Cauvery delta gets a good monsoon, more than 50 TMC of water does not flow in the sea. ,

If this happens, construction of a dam to hold 67.16 TMC of water will not only deprive the low-lying coastal areas in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry from excessive water flow but will also make the entire area below Mekedatu dependent on the upper coastal state for water. added.

The protesters called on the Tamil Nadu government to ensure that the Mekedatu issue is permanently dropped as a point of discussion in the Cauvery Water Management Authority meetings.
