States to get PM Mitra Mega Textile Park include TN, Maharashtra, Gujarat, UP

The central government announced on Friday that seven mega textile parks would be set up under it. 4,445 crore- PM Mega Integrated Textile Region and Apparel (PM Mitra) scheme will be set up in Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.

This comes after the Ministry of Textiles notified the setting up of textile parks on 21 October 2021, as announced in the Union Budget for 2021-22. States showing interest included Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Odisha and Rajasthan.

Punjab had earlier sought a park near Matewara forest in Ludhiana, but dropped the proposal following protests over environmental concerns.

“PM Mitra Mega Textile Park will give a boost to the textile sector in line with the 5F (Farm to Fiber to Factory to Fashion to Foreign) vision. Happy to share that PM Mitra Mega Textile Parks are set up in Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and UP.

“The PM Mitra Mega Textile Park will provide state-of-the-art infrastructure for the textile sector, attract crores of investment and create lakhs of jobs,” Modi said.

India’s textile and apparel exporters complain that a largely fragmented supply chain and high logistics costs drive up the cost of production, one reason export orders have increasingly moved to countries such as Bangladesh and Vietnam.

Textile manufacturers say that these mega parks can help bring back textile orders as a result of a planned integrated textile value chain including spinning, weaving and processing at a single location.

Mint had reported that around 13 states had sent 18 proposals for the textile park, but Punjab did not meet the criteria for providing 1,000 acres of litigation/encumbrance-free land. Madhya Pradesh had sent four proposals, and Maharashtra and Karnataka had sent two proposals each and the government planned to select one proposal from each state.
