During the festive season, people indulge in plenty of late night parties, lots of festive food, disrupted sleep schedules and too much alcohol. Amidst all the festivities, preparations, pujas and parties, it can be tough to stay properly hydrated throughout the day. Hydration levels are an important factor in improving blood circulation and energy levels, so it’s important to get enough fluids.

Staying hydrated helps strengthen the immune system and increases resilience against stress and infection, nutritionist and lifestyle educator Karishma Chawla told The Indian Express.

Our body gets hydrated not only through the fluids we drink but also through the food we eat. About 20 percent of the body’s water requirement can be met through food. But when you try to stay hydrated, it’s important that you eat more fruits and vegetables in their raw form. Since these items have high water content, they can provide more water when digested.

Here are some expert tips to help you stay hydrated this Diwali:

  1. Drinking a cup of carrot and celery juice is very good for the body. Drink it just before breakfast to get significant morning hydration.
  2. You can also start your day by drinking water at lukewarm temperature with the juice of half a lemon. If you want, you can also add a pinch of cinnamon.
  3. Drink some soup while dining at late night feasts and parties.
  4. You can get some hydration in the evening with homemade herbal tea. To make it more effective, add ingredients like black pepper and ginger to it.
  5. Drink coconut water as it is loaded with electrolytes that regulate the fluid balance of the body.
  6. Drink water containing basil, mint or citrus fruits throughout the day.
  7. If you drink alcohol, do not drink on an empty stomach. Drink at least two glasses of water for every glass of wine.
