Steps taken to remove encroachments from ponds insufficient: NGT | Noida News – Times of India

NOIDA: National Green Tribunal (NGT) said about the measures taken by the officials on Tuesday Noida Authority, District Administration and Pollution Department were insufficient to remove encroachments from wetlands and ponds. The Green Tribunal has directed the officials to be present during the next hearing on October 12.
Bench of the Tribunal consisting of Judicial Member Justice Arun Kumar Tyagi and expert member Dr Afroz Ahmed observed and gave directions on a petition filed by environmentalist Abhishta Kusum Gupta.
Petitioner’s counsel Sunil J Mathews said the tribunal asked the authorities how many meetings have been held so far and what action has been taken to remove the encroachments. “The officials did not give a satisfactory reply. The tribunal said that the Noida Authority officials are only doing paperwork and not doing any concrete work on the land. It also asked officials of the Noida authority, district administration and pollution department to appear in person during the next hearing on October 12.
The UP Pollution Control Board submitted a report to the NGT on August 4, stating that there are 1,031 ponds in the district, of which 202 have been occupied. There are 245 ponds in Sadar Tehsil, out of which 33 are encroached. Jewar Tehsil There are 306 ponds, out of which 35 are encroached. This includes eight ponds on the land acquired for the Noida airport project. There are 480 ponds in Dadri tehsil, out of which 134 have been encroached upon.
