Student of Odisha’s BJB College commits suicide, allegation of ragging in suicide note

A 19-year-old student of the prestigious BJB Autonomous College died after allegedly committing suicide at her hostel on Saturday, sparking fears that she ended her life due to ragging by seniors, police said. Deputy Commissioner of Police Prateek Singh said that the first year student of Plus-III Arts with history honor was found hanging inside her room in the women’s hostel. The police found a suicide note from the room in which he had said that he was mentally tortured by three seniors of the college. However, he did not name anyone and it is also not known whether the three are boarders of the hostel or not.

Though people know that there was no ragging at BJB Autonomous College, but three senior students were ragging and harassing me, she mentioned in the suicide note addressed to her father.

Students, who are All. was preparing for India Civil Services Examination, also said in the note that she was unable to concentrate on her studies due to “harassment”.

College principal Niranjan Mishra said that he was not aware of any incident of ragging in the college and the deceased had not made any such complaint. Her mother, who lives in Cuttack, lodged a complaint with the Badagada police station here, demanding a proper investigation and arrest of the three senior students responsible for her daughter’s death. Police said the student took this step when her roommate went to attend classes at 10 am. Her roommates said she was normal then and asked them to bring class notes for her.

Meanwhile, workers of Odisha unit of NSUI staged a sit-in in front of Haier’s official residence. education Minister Rohit Pujari demanded his resignation for the government’s failure to stop ragging in the college. He also demanded the immediate arrest of those three senior students. Some activists were caught by the police when they started throwing tomatoes targeting the minister’s house.
