Students clash in Punjab’s Moga over T20 World Cup final match

Punjab Police detains students of Lala Lajpat Rai College in Moga after scuffle over T20 between students from Bihar and Kashmir World Cup final on 13 November. The police had detained five students each from Kashmir and Bihar as a precautionary measure to stop the fighting.

Nasser Khuehami, national convener of the Jammu and Kashmir Students’ Association, spoke to The Free Press Journal and clarified the situation regarding the matter. He said that the police have released all the detained Kashmiri students.

On November 13, a brawl broke out between students in a college in Moga as everyone was into the England vs Pakistan T20 World Cup final. A student from Bihar’s group claims that students from Kashmir raised pro-Pakistan slogans and instigated the fight. However, the Kashmiri group claims that the fight was instigated by another group, which had earlier raised anti-Islamic slogans. The details of what actually happened are unconfirmed.

The debate escalated and turned violent. Many students got trapped and injured in this. Police had to be called to bring the situation under control.

Khuhmi said that he spoke to SSP Moga Punjab Gulneet Khurana. He also claims that the news of the sloganeering was fake. He also said that Kashmiri students have received minor injuries. He said that the matter has been taken up with the Punjab Government and Police authorities for early redressal.

Quoting SSP Moga, Khuhmi said, “All five students have now been released. We have taken all measures for the safety of all students from Kashmir and have also taken steps to see that Kashmiri students and other May relations between people remain cordial.”

Earlier, videos of the fight, which showed students pushing each other and throwing pieces of stones and bricks, had gone viral. After the incident several students were taken to the hospital for treatment of the injured. An official statement has not yet emerged about what happened and who is responsible.
