Students, college staff come together to convert neglected crematorium into garden

The students and staff of Smt. Sushiladevi Deshmukh Senior College, Maharashtra have planted more than 300 trees in the crematorium premises, which have been neglected for the past several years.

Until a few years ago, the Khadgaon crematorium, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Latur Municipal Corporation, lay in a neglected state – with no gates, stray animals making it their home, and tall weeds covering the premises . But, the students and staff college decided to give it a facelift.

Several students along with other college staff came together over the past seven years to plant more than 300 trees in a crematorium complex and turn the area into a lush green garden. This was part of the nature conservation campaign taken by him.

College principal Dr Ajay Patil told PTI that since 2014, they have planted over 300 trees of different varieties, including neem, banyan, gulmohar and peepal, in the campus with permission from the civic body.

He said that the complex now looks completely transformed, with tall trees of various fruits and trees without fruit. “The cremation ground has now turned into a garden in bloom,” he said.

According to media reports, when Latur experienced severe drought in 2016, college students and other staff also used water tankers to nourish the trees planted by them on the campus. To take care of the tree planted, some college staff adopted each tree at the cremation ground. The Principal said that the college staff also regularly conduct cleanliness and other social awareness campaigns.

Appreciating their effort, corporator Jadhav said, “Earlier, there was not a single tree in the crematorium premises, but now the place is green, and they (college staff and students) regularly conduct cleanliness drives there. I’ve seen his work.”
