Students dropping out of school to prepare for IIT are ‘destroying the fabric of education’, says IISc professor

The education system plays an important role in deciding the learning outcomes of the students. Hinting at the ‘unstructured’ schooling, Indian physicist Arindam Ghosh recently shared a famous quote from Albert Einstein on Twitter.

In the tweet, the IISc Bangalore professor shared a screenshot of a post from a Twitter handle dedicated to American physicist Professor Richard Feynman. The tweet read, ‘The value of college education is not to learn many facts but to train the mind to think. – A. Einstein (1879-1955).

Sharing it on his wall, Arindam Ghosh highlights the importance of schooling and how the recent structure is destroying the minds of students. He tweeted, ‘Like college, balanced education is very important in school too. This is the reason why kids who drop out of class 8 or 9 to start preparing for IIT JEE are destroying the basic fabric of education in this country.

The tweet was followed by a series of replies from various users. One of the users thanked the professor for bringing up the issue, while some called it a marketing stunt of the coaching institutes. This followed a debate as to whether students were choosing the structure of hiding facts in order to pass the entrance exam. Different users had different opinions on this.

“Ultimately, we are making robots out of humans. I have many such examples where a class 12th aspirant is interested in AI, ML, Robotics but is not able to explain simple things like atom, electron, electricity, energy etc. Because AI maintains social status, Electron does not,” wrote one user. ‘Doing something for the love of it’ is a foreign concept when it comes to education in India. Following a pattern for success is what we love to do. The faster you copy, the faster you forget,” wrote another. (sic)

However, there have been many such incidents in the past where the IIT-JEE craze has blown parents’ heads. In 2017, a question on Quora caught people’s attention. A parent asked about the best institute for IIT coaching for class 5th student. The question drew criticism and many users called out the parents for their mindset and the pressure they are creating on their child. A survey report by HSBC titled ‘The Values of Education’ found that 51 percent of parents prioritize their children’s successful careers and not their health and happiness.
