A new study has found a link between increased screen time in children and young adults with higher risk and severity of myopia, or myopia. Myopia is a condition in which distant objects appear blurry. High levels of smart device screen time, such as looking at a mobile phone, are associated with an approximately 30 percent higher risk of myopia, and when combined with excessive computer use, this risk rises to about 80 percent. A high degree of myopia increases the risk of retinal rupture and major ocular disorders such as glaucoma. By 2050 about half of the global population is expected to have myopia, so it is a health concern that is growing rapidly. People should review their relationship with electronic devices.
