Study says people infected with alpha variant release 100 times more virus into the air than original COVID strain

One study found that people infected with the covid alpha variant exhaled 100 times more virus into the air than those infected with the original strains of the virus.

Researchers at the University of Maryland suggested the need for better ventilation and tight-fitting masks, in addition to widespread vaccination, to help stop the spread of the virus.

The findings showed that the amount of virus in the air coming from the alpha type infection was much higher – 18 times higher – which could be explained by nasal swelling and increased amounts of virus in saliva.

These major increases in airborne viruses from alpha infection occurred before the arrival of the delta variant and indicate that the virus is evolving to be better able to travel in the air.

“We already knew that the virus in saliva and nasal swabs increased in alpha type infections. Viruses from the nose and mouth can be spread by spray of large droplets close to the infected person. But, our study shows that the virus is growing even more in exhaled aerosols,” explained Jianyu Lai, a doctoral student at the university.

While the study, published in Clinical Infectious Diseases, focused on the alpha version and the original strain of the virus, researchers believe the delta version is even more transmissible.

“We know the delta version now circulating is even more contagious than the alpha version. Our research indicates that as variants are becoming better able to travel through the air, we must provide better ventilation and Tight-fitting masks should be worn, in addition to vaccination, to help prevent the spread of the virus,” said Dr Don Milton, professor of environmental health at the University School of Public Health.
