Subaru says it has suspended shipments of some models due to engine sensor malfunction

About 54,000 cars with the engine have been sold in Japan since October 2020 and are for-market only, the spokesperson said, refusing to comment on the number of cars affected by the shipment suspension.

Japan’s Subaru Corp has suspended shipments of some of its three main automobile models due to a fault in engine sensors and also plans to temporarily halt production of the models, the company said on Friday.

A spokesman said the automaker discovered a problem with the sensor in the CB18 engine used in its Forester, Outback and Levorg models, adding that production of models with that engine would be halted without further details.

About 54,000 cars with the engine have been sold in Japan since October 2020 and are for-market only, the spokesperson said, refusing to comment on the number of cars affected by the shipment suspension.

The spokesman said Subaru has not decided whether to recall the cars and it could take 2-1/2 months before shipments can resume. The spokesperson said the company will continue to produce and ship models that do not use the CB18 engine.

The spokesman said that the engine could not start due to sensor fault and a warning sign appeared on the dashboard.

Subaru shares fell 3% in early morning trading in Tokyo after being hit by sell orders at the open.
