Sudarshan Patnaik, known for his globally popular sand art, this time decided to make a 105 feet long hockey stick using 5000 hockey balls. The sand artist used over five tonnes of sand for the sculpture, which also showcases the newly constructed Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium in Rourkela.

Having completed this incredible art installation over two days, Sudarshan Patnaik has once again displayed Odisha’s passion for the national sport.

He said, “There is celebration in every village in Odisha where you go because of the World Cup. It is a very special event for the people of Odisha and there is celebration everywhere. Everyone in this beautiful state We wanted to create something unique this time, so we thought of using hockey balls and creating this installation,” Patnaik said in a media release issued by Hockey India.

It took Sudarshan and his team of 15 students two full days to complete the installation and it will be on display till January 11, when thousands of people will throng the Barabati Stadium to catch a glimpse of it. Bollywood Stars will perform in the opening ceremony

“During the last World Cup, we had installed sand art at the Kalinga Hockey Stadium and the art work depicted prominent monuments of Odisha like Konark. This time we have used the installation to welcome all the 16 participating teams to Odisha and we have made 16 national flags in the installation,” said Patnaik, excited about this unique creation.

Notably, Patnaik was awarded the Padma Shri in 2014 for participating in the globally renowned sand art competition. Till date, he has participated in more than 60 international sand art championships as well as festivals.
