Excerpts from the interview:-

You have a wonderfully diverse repertoire in terms of your writing. You have gone from writing short stories to non-fiction to IT related books and the list goes on. Now, playing perfect tune in each of these styles is difficult, how do you achieve it?

Well, I started with a travelogue and I wrote in Kannada for the first 20-25 years and then later I wrote in English. My first book was published in English when I was 52, I wrote in Kannada till then and I wrote travelogues in Kannada because in 1978 I traveled alone in America with my backpack, which was somewhat unusual in those days Was because I am a small town girl.

After that, I posted some novels which I wrote about computer science for rural people as it was an introduction to computers in those days. I wrote about 7-8 novels but since 2004, I don’t think I have written any novel because I realized that more than novels it is non-fiction that serves as great lessons in life and more than fiction is important. It was not difficult as I wrote according to whatever work I did.

Which genre did you find most difficult to write in and why?

Sometimes I find it very difficult to write for children because we have to be very careful about the words and topics we choose. If something is wrong in the book, it will affect the child’s mind. For example, you cannot use the word ‘servant’. You should be able to maintain the interest of a child throughout the story and for this you should be a child yourself and keep your mind unbiased.

For someone like you, you are constantly busy. I am sure you are constantly engaged in engagements which may be related to foundation work or other things. How and when do you write, what is your writing process like?

I don’t write every day. Even while doing my work, I will always be thinking of something to write in my mind and when the emotions gather and the whole structure is ready in my mind, it takes me about 10-15 days to write, not more. But, I prefer to write early in the morning, not in the later part of the day. I can finish in the morning and then I will continue to do my other work.

You have been writing for quite some time now and have written some really successful books. In all these years of writing, what are some of your key findings?

Writing for me is an expression of my feelings and I enjoy writing. I don’t write to please someone, it makes me happy. When I write, I don’t publish it for a while and read it again to see if it needs any changes. I always believe that there is a line of experience and a line of imagination and I weave it that way.

If you had to recommend one book to each member of your family, what would they be?

It depends on what they like. Rishi would like economics more and I need not suggest it, he himself would suggest me some books. He always gifted me very nice books. In our house, everyone has their own library, including my grandchildren. (Narayana) Murthy will have more technical books. Akshata and I have similar tastes. My grandchildren have more adventure books.
