Gukesh is on a winning spree this year by winning four tournament titles and reaching number 32 in the world chess rankings based on live ELO ratings.

Chennai’s 16-year-old Grandmaster D Gukesh became the sixth Indian to reach and cross the coveted 2700 ELO rating mark in chess. Following his win against GM Le Quang Liam of Vietnam at the Biel Chess Festival (Classic) in Switzerland on Saturday, taking his points to 2.5 in 3 games, the young grandmaster’s live ELO rating reached 2703.9.

Only two other players – China’s Wei Yi (a few months before the age of 16) and French player of Iranian origin Alireza Firoza, achieved it before Gukesh, 16 years and almost 2 months, even world champion Magnus Carlsen. Received a FIDE rating of 2700 when he was 16 and a half years old. Note, this is a live rating; FIDE updates its ratings list every month and Gukesh will have to stay above 2700 in games to be played over the next 15 days to avoid shock for live ratings.

This is an important milestone for Gukesh, as 2700 is unofficially considered the mark for a super-GM in chess. Out of 3,90,626 rated players recognized by FIDE, only 128 players have crossed the 2700 rating mark and if Gukesh maintains the mark by the end of this month, FIDE will officially recognize him as 129. th player to achieve it.

Players who achieved this position early in their careers always reached peak ratings of over 2750 and some such as Carlsen (peak live rating of 2882), Turquoise (2804), Fabiano Caruana (2844), Maxime Vachier-Lagrave ( 2819 ), Vladimir Kramnik (2817), Wesley So (2822), Ding Liren (2816) and Alexander Grischuk (2810) crossed the 2800 mark in total. This bodes well for Gukesh’s career as he progresses and gains experience.

Gukesh joins a group of Indian Grandmaster youth, including GM Arjun Arigasi, GM R Pragnananda, GM Nihal Sareen and GM Raunak Sadhwani, who have recently demonstrated their skills in their teens and achieved significant ELO ratings . While GMs Pragyanand and Nihal Sarin stole a march with high ELO ratings at a tender age early in their careers, GMs Arjun and Gukesh have had stellar tournaments lately, placing them among junior GMs in the ratings tally as Nihal and Gukesh. He has been taken above Pragyananand. Gukesh in particular has been on a winning spree, capturing four tournament titles this year and rising to 32nd in the world chess rankings based on live ELO ratings.

All these five youngsters, including Gukesh, are now representing India either in the “A” team (Arjuna) or in the “B” team (Nihal, Pragyananand, Gukesh and Raunak) at the upcoming Chess Olympiad to be held in Chennai from 28 July to 10 August. are. ,
