Supreme Court dismisses plea to recognize hockey as the national sport of India

The Supreme Court of India dismissed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by advocate Vishal Tiwari, seeking a direction to the Union of India (UOI) and other related organizations to recognize hockey as the national sport of India . The decision was taken by an apex court bench headed by Justice Uday Umesh Lalit, and also headed by Justices S Ravindra Bhat and Bela M Trivedi.

Tiwari asked the court in his petition, ‘If the country can have a national animal, then why can’t the country have its own national sport. The petition has urged the court to issue directions to the government for the development of athletic games and sports and to provide advanced training and funds to the sportspersons. live law.

The petition further said, “While India is a superpower in cricket and produces some of the brightest minds and leaders, it struggles in other areas. In the shadow of cricket, the game of hockey has lost its popularity in light of the lack of initiative and support from the UOI.”

Disagreeing with the petition, the presiding judge, Justice UU Lalit said, “There has to be a campaign within the people. Players like Mary Kom rise above all adversity. The court can’t do anything.”

“We will not be able to do anything. You can withdraw the petition, or we will dismiss it,” said the bench, expressing its reluctance to consider the petition. Tiwari eventually withdrew the PIL.

Despite the court dismissing the petition, the bench expressed its concurrence and sympathy with the petitioner, but also said that they cannot issue orders directly to the government in this regard.

The petition acknowledged the fact that despite India being one of the greatest dominions of the sport, it had not been able to receive any Olympic awards for more than 40 years. The misfortune of the game broke in the Tokyo Olympics when the Indian hockey team won the bronze medal and brought a new wave in the world of Indian hockey.
