Supreme Court warns, “Forcible conversions will not stop…”

Terming forced conversions as a “very serious” issue, the Supreme Court on Monday asked the Center to make serious efforts to stop the practice.

It also warned that a “very difficult situation” would emerge if forced conversions were not stopped.

A bench of Justices MR Shah and Hema Kohli asked Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to enumerate the measures to check the practice through inducement.

“This is a very serious matter. Serious efforts should be made by the Center to stop the forced conversions. Otherwise a very difficult situation will come. Tell us what action you propose… you have to take action.

“This is a very serious issue that affects the security of the nation and the freedom of religion and conscience. Therefore, it is better that the Union of India clarify its stand and what further steps can be taken to stop such forced conversions. Can, file counter on this.” said the bench.

The top court was hearing a plea filed by advocate Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay, seeking a direction to the Center and states to take stringent measures to control fraudulent conversions “by cheating through threats, intimidation, gifts and monetary gains”. was demanded.
