Suresh Raina announces retirement from all forms of cricket

Former India cricketer Suresh Raina has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket on 6 September.

Making the announcement on Twitter, he wrote, “It is an absolute honor to represent my country and state UP. I want to announce my retirement from all forms of cricket. I would like to thank BCCI, UPCA Cricket, Chennai IPL, Shukla Rajeev sir and all my fans for their support and unwavering belief in my abilities.

Earlier in 2020, Raina announced his retirement from international cricket. His announcement came less than an hour after MS Dhoni announced his retirement on August 15. He continued to play IPL in 2021 but was released by Chennai Super Kings before the 2022 season.

Since an active India or domestic player cannot participate in foreign leagues, Raina needs to take this step to explore T20 leagues across the world.

He can also be seen in Cricket South Africa’s new T20 league to be held next year, which features all six teams owned by the IPL franchise, including CSK.

Raina played his last competitive game in October 2021 when he played for CSK against Rajasthan Royals in Abu Dhabi.

Raina was part of the 2011 World Cup winning team. In an international career spanning 13 years, Raina represented India in 18 Tests, 226 ODIs and 78 T20Is.

He scored 5615 runs in 226 ODIs and 1605 runs from 78 T20Is for India. Raina, who scored a century on his Test debut, is also the first Indian to score a century in all three formats of cricket and his hundreds were scored outside India.

Playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Suresh Raina has scored 5528 runs in 205 IPL matches at a strike rate of 136.76 with 39 fifties and one century.
