‘Survey’ of Income Tax Department Newsclick, Newslaundry Office

The ED investigation was based on a first information report filed by the Delhi Police.

The Income Tax Department on Friday conducted a survey on the official premises of two digital media platforms, Newsclick and Newslaundry, to check their financial records.

The survey work was carried out in the offices of two organizations located in South Delhi.

In February, the Enforcement Directorate searched premises linked to NewsClick in connection with an alleged money laundering probe into receiving funds from abroad.

The ED investigation was based on a first information report filed by the Delhi Police. It was alleged that the company running the platform had received funding from a US-based firm that had already been liquidated.

Newsclick had said in a statement that if the ED and the government were truthful and followed the law, no wrongdoing would be found. “Newsclick has nothing to hide,” alleging that with the current government it has become a routine practice to deploy government-controlled agencies to deal with those who disagree and criticize the government.

NewsClick and its editors had earlier approached the Delhi High Court seeking interim relief in the case being run by the ED.
