T20 World Cup: New Zealand beat India by 8 wickets

After defeating India on Sunday, New Zealand have put them in danger of losing the semi-finals in the ICC T20 World Cup.

Daryl Mitchell top-scored with 49 as New Zealand beat India by eight wickets to register their first win of the tournament.

Fast bowler Trent Boult and leg-spinner Ish Sodhi restricted India to 110 for seven after the Kiwis decided to bowl first in Dubai.

The unbeaten 33-year-old Mitchell and skipper Kane Williamson put on a 72-run stand for the second wicket as New Zealand played home in 14.3 overs to hand India their second defeat of the tournament in as many matches.

New Zealand acted with the ball as India were restricted to 110/7 in a Group 2 match of the Super 12 stage of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

New Zealand spinner Ish Sodhi, who took two wickets against India, said the wicket was slower than in the England-Australia match and when you try to bowl at a slower pace the ball turns.

“The pitch was definitely slower than we (England-AUS game). A little cover of grass but it played slower than expected. The main tactic was bowling first. The teams have managed to bowl first here, so The toss was based on that opinion Ish Sodhi said after mid-innings.

He said, “Not much bad, but that’s what happens when you bowl a slow ball. It’s hard to catch under lights here, unfortunate with those two drops. If you had asked before the game started, if You told us that we can limit them to less than 120, we will definitely take it.”

For New Zealand, Trent Boult took three wickets while Sodhi took two wickets.

For the Men in Blue, Ravindra Jadeja and Hardik Pandya scored 26* and 23 as none of the Indian batsmen crossed the 30-run mark.

After a quick start, India scored 11 runs in the last over and reached 110 runs in 20 overs.
