Form of words:

New Delhi: Reversing a recommendation for middle-aged men in the US to take daily low-dose aspirin to prevent heart attack or stroke, a medical task force evaluating recent studies says the risk of taking blood-thinners Probably outweighs the benefits.

The US Preventive Services Task Force is an independent panel of experts that reviews the evidence for effectiveness and develops recommendations for disease prevention. His recommendations have an impact on medical practices in America.

Chien-Wen Tseng, a member of the task force, said, “Our message … if you don’t have a history of heart attack and stroke, you shouldn’t start on aspirin just because you’ve reached a certain age. “ said Washington Post.

The task force’s change in stance comes after a review of scientific studies showed that taking low-dose aspirin has little benefit for people aged 40 to 59 who are at risk of heart disease.

Who should take it and who should not?

according to the task force draft recommendationPeople who have a 10 percent risk of developing heart disease in the next ten years should make a decision about taking aspirin in consultation with their health care provider.

In addition, people over the age of 60 do not benefit from taking aspirin as a preventive measure if they have no history of heart disease or stroke.

Aspirin prevents clots from forming in blood vessels, and thus may prevent stroke or cardiovascular events. But blood thinners can also cause major bleeding.

The task force does not recommend any changes for people who have been prescribed a heart attack or stroke.

According to Tseng, the proposed recommendations of the task force are intended to ensure that people do not start taking aspirin without consulting their doctors.

The recommendations are now open for public comment, and have not yet been approved by the US government.

In 2016, the panel was recommended Use of low-dose aspirin to prevent colorectal cancer and heart disease in people aged 50 to 59 who were at increased risk of heart attack and stroke.

But now the task force believes that the benefit of taking aspirin is less than before.

Meanwhile, for colorectal cancer, the evidence is still unclear whether aspirin may have preventive benefits. The panel has sought further research on this.
