Taliban: Taliban vows to give cash, land to kin of attackers – Times of India

Kabul : Taliban has promised plots of land to relatives of suicide bombers who attacked US and Afghan soldiers, in a provocative gesture that seems to run counter to their efforts to court international support. Taliban’s caretaker interior minister Sirajuddin Haqqani, offered a reward to the family members of the attackers who had gathered at a hotel in Kabul, interior Ministry Spokesman saeed khostya tweeted on Tuesday.
Addressing the gathering on Monday, Haqqani praised the sacrifices of “martyrs and fidayeen”, referring to the fighters killed in the suicide attacks, khostyo tweeted. Haqqani called him a “hero of Islam and the country”, according to the spokesman. At the end of the meeting, he paid 10,000 . distributed afghani ($112) per family and promised one plot of land to each.
The incident comes as the Taliban attempts to open diplomatic channels with an international community that is reluctant to formally recognize their rule in Afghanistan. The promise of rewards for the suicide bombings indicates conflicting perspectives within the Taliban leadership. They are trying to position themselves as responsible rulers, promising security for all and condemning suicide attacks by rivals, the militant Islamic State-Khorasan. On the other hand, when it comes to his followers he admires this kind of strategy. The Taliban cannot afford to isolate the US, which has accumulated billions of dollars of Afghan wealth in American accounts.
At the same time, the Taliban cannot afford to lose their hardline base, especially in the wake of the growing IS-threatening threat. Suicide bombings and roadside explosives were tactics used by the Taliban to dismantle Afghan and US forces during the 20-year insurgency.
