Tamil director Jayabharathi’s crowdfunded film Kudisai completes 43 years of release

Tamil director Jayabharathi explored the idea of making films on unconventional subjects in the 1970s. The director made his debut film Kudisai out of crowdfunding. Kudisai was released on March 30, 1979, and is preserved at the National Film Archives of India. The film has completed 43 years of release.

According to Jayabharthi, Kudisai was also the first Tamil film to be shot through crowdfunding. Before starting her career in cinema, Jayabharti worked as an assistant director. He also wrote 75 stories.

Apart from his love for literature, Jayabharti also admired good cinema. He rented the Krishnaveni Theater in Chennai and used to watch films directed by Satyajit Ray and Mrinal Sen. Seeing these films, Jayabharti’s love for cinema grew to such an extent that she announced the shooting of her first film within ten days.

Jayabharti’s friends were shocked. They were not tensed about the story of the film knowing Jayabharti’s writing skills. He did not know how he would manage the funds for the film.

However, Jayabharti was least concerned about money. The director told his friends that he would manage the fund by collecting Rs 500 from 10 people.

Rajasekhar, one of Jayabharti’s closest friends, helped him set up the camera on the debt. In Padi Kuppam, a farmer provided him food during the shoot. To cover further costs, Jayabharti collected funds by organizing art shows in colleges.

Ceylon Manohar, a singer and another friend of Jaybharti, helped her raise funds through her show. Newcomers like Kamala Kamesh were given a chance. Apart from Kamala, Dandyupani and Raazi were also seen in the film. Kamala’s husband G. Kamesh has composed the music for this film. The film was bankrolled by Juvala.

The film was appreciated by the audience and critics alike. It was screened at all the film festivals of South India at that time. Jayabharti’s love for the art of cinema inspired her to endure such hardships in making good films.
