Chennai: d ranjithoA 27-year-old handicapped candidate from Coimbatore, with hearing and speaking disabilities, on Friday lauded his achievements by securing 750th rank in the tough civil services examination in his first attempt.
His mother, who did his B.Ed in special education and taught him lip reading, was lost for words after the UPSC declared the results on Friday. His son is likely to get the coveted IAS, a topper among the differently-abled students who took the exam in Tamil.
“We were worried about his future. But today all our worries are gone and we are happy and proud,” Ranjit’s mother Amritvalli told TOI.
Ranjith chose Tamil literature as his optional subject and wrote the exam in Tamil.
“He used to sit in the front row and read our lips while attending classes,” said K Sabrinathan, one of the trainers who coached him on current affairs.

This year 36 students from Tamil Nadu have cleared the exam. Last year, 45 TN candidates were successful.
