Chennai:

Tamil Nadu Congress President KS Alagiri on Monday expressed confidence that the party candidate will win the upcoming bypoll to Erode East constituency with a huge margin.

“Our party’s candidate EVKS Elangovan is going to win with a huge margin,” said the Congress state unit chief. He said that on February 15, the party’s state in-charge Dinesh Gundurao is going to campaign in Erode East constituency.

Earlier in January, the Election Commission had announced by-elections for the Erode East constituency in Tamil Nadu on 27 February. The counting of votes will be done on March 2.

The bypoll was necessitated by the death of Congress MLA Thirumagan, the great-grandson of social reformer ‘Periyar’ EV Ramasamy and son of former Union minister EVKS Elangovan.

Last month, while addressing party workers at a protest against Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi in Chennai, Mr Alagiri also said that Lord Ram would also cast his vote for the Congress party in the bypolls.

The Tamil Nadu Congress president claimed, “If Lord Ram is asked who will you vote for? Lord Ram will vote for the Congress and not the BJP.”

The Congress is seeking to retain the constituency, which is one of the 25 seats allotted to it in the DMK’s secular progressive alliance.

In the last elections, Yuvaraj M of the Tamil Maanila Congress (TMC) came second, contesting on the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam’s (AIADMK) two-leaves symbol.

The bypolls are being closely watched as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) may decide to go it alone.
