Tamil Nadu police on Sunday recovered “low intensity explosive material” from the house of a man killed in a cylinder blast in a car here and said the material like potassium nitrate seized was for “future” use.

Hours after the incident took place in the early hours today, state police chief C Silendra Babu said there has been “good progress” in the investigation and added that the possibility of a National Investigation Agency (NIA) probe into the matter will be known when the probe is completed. The top official said the man, identified as 25-year-old Jemisha Mubeen, was earlier questioned by the NIA, but there was no case against him nor any “adverse notice”.

Addressing reporters later in the day, Babu said that a case has been registered at Ukkad police station in connection with the incident and investigation is on.

Babu said there was no case against the victim, but over the years those who had links with her have been brought under the scanner.

Asked whether the NIA had earlier conducted a ‘search’ against Mubeen, the top official replied in the affirmative.

“Some inquiries took place… there was no adverse notice (against Mubeen),” he said.

He said security has been beefed up across the state ahead of the Diwali festival and extra vigil would be maintained in Coimbatore.

The victim was an engineering graduate, he said. “The chances are low” was his answer to a question on the possibility of a suicide attack mission involving the victim.

He lauded the investigation teams for making rapid progress in the matter within 12 hours of the incident and said that each team was assigned a specific task in relation to the case.

The incident took place near the Kottai Easwaran temple and all nearby shops were closed and a large number of police personnel have been deployed in the area. Being a communally sensitive area, tense situation prevailed in Ukkadam area, where the blast took place in the early hours of Sunday.
