DA hike for Tamil Nadu government employees extended till January 1, 2022: CM Stalin

Chief Minister MK Stalin on Tuesday announced in the state assembly that the hike in Dearness Allowance (DA) for government employees and pensioners in Tamil Nadu will be extended by three months and will be implemented from January 1, 2022.

CM Stalin said that the increase in DA for employees and pensioners in the revised budget (2021-22) was announced with effect from April 1, 2022.

However, considering the representations received from unions of government employees, the DA hike will be implemented for them and pensioners with effect from January 1, 2022, despite severe financial constraints, the chief minister said.

The move will benefit 16 lakh government employees and pensioners and the hike in dearness allowance will lead to an additional expenditure of Rs 1,620 crore for three months and Rs 6,480 crore for one year.

An office-bearer of a government employees’ union said the DA is expected to be increased at par with the Center’s announcement of 11 per cent in line with the practice so far.

“Usually, the state government announces the DA hike immediately after the Centre’s announcement. This is the first time we are seeing such a scenario,” he said.

Unions of government employees are demanding an increase of 11 per cent DA.

Effective July 1, 2021, the Center had announced an 11 per cent increase (from 17 per cent to 28 per cent) in DA and dearness relief to central government employees and pensioners, respectively.
