Tamil Nadu Election Commission constitutes 1,650 flying squads

The Tamil Nadu State Election Commission on Monday said in view of the February 19 urban local bodies elections, general public holding cash in excess of Rs 50,000 must have valid documents, without which it will be confiscated by the flying squad.

A total of 1,650 flying squads have been constituted by TNSEC in view of the elections to 21 Municipal Corporations, 138 Municipalities and 490 Nagar Panchayats across the state.

Advertisement material, prohibited liquor or gift material worth more than Rs 10,000 will be confiscated by the flying squad, the commission said in a release.

The cash confiscated by the flying squad will have to be deposited in the treasury on the directions of the court.

A total of 1,369 nominations were received across the state on Monday.

TNSEC said that 219 nominations were received for the posts of Corporation Ward Member, 445 for the posts of Nagar Palika Ward Member, 705 for the posts of Nagar Panchayat Ward Member.

Including the data received since Monday, the total number of nominations received so far is 1,468, which includes 241 nominations for corporation ward member posts, 475 for municipality ward member posts and 752 for nagar panchayat ward member posts.

A total of 12,838 posts will be filled through the urban body elections, including 1,374 municipal ward members, 3,843 municipality ward members and 7,621 nagar panchayat ward members.
