CHENNAI: Fresh Covid-19 cases in Tamil Nadu fell below the 10,000-mark on Friday after nearly 28 days, when the state added 9,916 new cases to the Covid registry. The state reported 30 deaths and 21,435 people discharged, and by the end of the day, there were 1.5 lakh people under treatment for the viral infection.
On January 7, when the third wave was at its peak, 8,981 new cases were reported in the state and 10,978 cases were reported the next day. As of January 21, the state recorded 30,744 new cases – the highest in the third wave. The cases have been decreasing since then. “And it is falling at the same speed it picked up,” Health Secretary J Radhakrishnan said. For example, from January 7, it took two weeks for cases to peak, and the same number of days for cases to drop below 10,000.
While there is a steep decline in the cases, the deaths continue to rise. Dr Narayanaswamy, head of the Government COVID Hospital in Guindy, said, “About 20% of people carry the delta variant. Non-vaccinated people and the elderly have complications from comorbid conditions that require oxygen therapy and admission to the ICU. ”
Meanwhile, Chennai reported 1475 new cases, followed by Coimbatore with 1224 cases. All other districts recorded less than 1,000 cases each.
