The Tamil Nadu government on Friday announced that a new set of restrictions would be imposed in the state till January 31, 2022. The state has witnessed an increase in the number of fresh Covid-19 cases in the last one week. Chief Minister MK Stalin announced the following restrictions after a review meeting on the COVID situation in the state.

  1. Chief Minister MK Stalin said that play schools and kindergarten sections cannot be run, but there will be no direct classes for classes 1-8 till January 1-8. He said that classes would be conducted for standard 9-12, colleges and ITIs in compliance with Standard Operating Procedures, while the existing guidelines would be applicable for places of worship.
  2. Dine-in services in restaurants, hotels and bakeries should be limited to 50 percent of capacity, while amusement parks can only be operated with an equal number of persons.
  3. He said the 50 per cent limit would also apply to textile showrooms, jewelery shops, gyms and yoga centres, multiplexes/cinema theaters (out of the permitted seats), beauty spas and salons and indoor games.
  4. The Chief Minister said that metro rail services here can operate with only 50 per cent seating capacity, while only seated passengers will be allowed in government bus services.
  5. The number of participants in weddings should be limited to 100 while only 50 persons will be allowed in death related events.
  6. Urging people to get vaccinated, the Chief Minister also emphasized on other COVID-appropriate behaviors such as wearing of face masks. All employees of commercial establishments should have been vaccinated against COVID-19. Apart from this, action will be taken for non-compliance of wearing of masks by establishments and customers.
  7. Stalin said that as part of virus containment measures, test-track-treat-vaccination-COVID-19 appropriate practices would be strictly enforced.
  8. Besides, only essential services should be allowed in containment zones, while door-to-door surveys will also be conducted by committees in such areas to prevent the spread of the contagion, the CM said. Fines will be imposed on those violating the pandemic containment measures, warned the CM.
  9. He appealed to the people to avoid overcrowding during the coming festive season and stressed on social distancing and wearing of masks.
  10. Tamil Nadu on Friday reported 1,155 new cases of coronavirus, up from 890 a day earlier.
