Tamil Nadu government releases fund for maintenance of schools

The Tamil Nadu government has released an amount of Rs 112.9 crore for the maintenance of schools under its Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) scheme. The government was widely criticized for failing to release funds for the maintenance of schools, while the northeast monsoon was about to hit the state.

According to the circular issued by the School Education Department, an amount of Rs 80.53 crore has been approved for primary and secondary schools, while Rs 38.74 crore has been approved for maintenance work in higher secondary schools.

Schools are required to display the sanctioned amount in the notice board of their schools and this fund is to be utilized within December 31, 2022. Schools can also use this fund for their maintenance, sanitation, purchase of school essentials and minor repairs.

In addition, schools can also use these funds to pay electricity and internet bills, improve drinking water facilities in schools and purchase new learning materials and materials.

The School Education Department in its circular has directed schools to compulsorily allot 10 percent of the sanctioned funds to improve cleanliness in schools and spread awareness about cleanliness among students. The school education department wants the schools concerned to bring awareness about cleanliness once a week.

The circular directed the schools to upload the details of expenditure on the Educational Management and Information System software of the School Education Department so that there is no appropriation of funds.

Speaking to IANS on the condition of anonymity, the headmaster of a high school in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruchi district said, “It is not possible to complete the maintenance before December 31 as the rains have already started. I hope that the school education The department will give more time for this work.”
