In such a situation, in the 44th International Chess Olympiad to be held at Mahabalipuram near Chennai from 28 July to 10 August this year, the state government has given an opportunity to the students of government schools to meet international chess players.

The 44th International Chess Olympiad where chess players from around 150 counties were expected to participate in the ‘Chess Festival’. After this the Government of Tamil Nadu and the All India Chess Federation have planned to organize Chess Olympiad in Mahabalipuram.

According to officials, this year’s chess competition will be special for the students as the winners/deserving students selected from the school level competition will be taken to watch the World Chess Olympiad Championship. Apart from the students, chess instructors at the school level will also be given a chance to witness the Chess Olympiad in Chennai. Eventually, the student’s interactions with international chess players will encourage them to take the game to the next level, officials said.

Meanwhile, a competition to select deserving students for watching Chess Olympiad was organized at Tiruvallur district level in which 175 students participated. First place students in the competition will be allowed to watch the Chess Olympiad with free accommodation.

Accordingly, on behalf of the Tiruvallur District Chess Association, the District Level Chess Tournament for Under-15 began on 14th June at Maharishi Vidya Mandir School, Kavarpettai. 175 students including 50 students from government schools of Tiruvallur district participated in the competition.

The winners will be awarded points based and the first two will be given a chance to watch the World Chess Tournament in Mahabalipuram.

“The final list of students will be prepared after the local chess competitions at the school level are over. Officials said that this initiative has been taken to motivate the students to learn more tips apart from interactive sessions from various coaches in the Olympiad.
