Tamil Nadu Governor walks out amid controversy over MK Stalin’s speech

The governor had left out parts of the speech prepared by the state government.

Chennai:

Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi today walked out of the Assembly after Chief Minister MK Stalin moved a motion asking the speaker to take on record only the speech prepared by the state government and the parts added or omitted by the governor from the customary address. Was asked to remove. The assembly passed a resolution only to record the original speech of the governor, which was prepared by the state government and translated by the speaker. RN Ravi left in a huff, without even waiting for the national anthem, to be sung later.

The governor omitted parts of the speech prepared by the state government, which contained references to secularism, described Tamil Nadu as a haven of peace and mentioned leaders like Periyar, BR Ambedkar, K Kamaraj, CN Annadurai and Karunanidhi, after which The Chief Minister introduced the resolution. He didn’t even read the reference to the ‘Dravidian model’ that the ruling DMK promotes.

MK Stalin, in the motion, said the Governor’s action was “against the conventions of the Assembly”.

The ruling DMK’s allies – the Congress, the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), the CPI, and the CPI(M) earlier boycotted the Governor’s address, raising slogans after protesting, his delay in approving the bills, which concerned the ban. Also included was online gambling, and reducing the governor’s powers to appoint vice-chancellors in state universities. 21 Bills passed by the Assembly are pending with the Governor.

“Quit Tamil Nadu” slogans were raised in the assembly against Mr. Ravi. The ruling DMK legislators also raised slogans saying, “Don’t impose the ideology of BJP, RSS.”

He also opposed the Governor’s recent remark that ‘Tamizhgam’ would be a “more appropriate name” for Tamil Nadu.

“Unfortunately there has been regressive politics in Tamil Nadu that we are Dravidians, and on the basis of the Constitution, we have been brought together. Over half a century every effort has been made to reinforce the narrative that we are not part of the nation. ” , an integral part of the nation. And even a different kind of narrative has been created. Everything that applies to the whole country, Tamil Nadu will say no,” the governor had said on Wednesday while speaking at a function held at the Raj Bhavan to felicitate the organizers and volunteers of the Kasi-Tamil Sangamam.

“It has become a habit. So many theses have been written – all false and shoddy novels. It must be broken. Truth must triumph. Indeed, Tamil Nadu is the land that holds the soul of India. Have an identity.” In fact, Thamizhgam would be a more appropriate word to call it,” said the governor.

There has been a face-off between the governor and the state government, with the ruling party accusing Mr. Ravi of acting at the behest of the BJP. DMK MP TR Balu had earlier slammed Mr Ravi for his suggestion of renaming the state, and said he should stop acting as the “second state president of the BJP”.

“Governor RN Ravi passes some controversial comments on a daily basis to create confusion, alienation and strife. The Governor said that ‘people have been cheated during 50 years of Dravidian politics’. This is highly condemnable as he is facing BJP This should be said from the state headquarters Kamalalayam.” And not from Raj Bhavan,” said Mr. Balu.
