Tamil Nadu Private Medical Colleges hike fee for MBBS, BDS courses

In self-financed medical colleges of Tamil Nadu, the one-year fee for government reserved seats for MBBS and BDS courses has been increased from Rs 4.3 lakh to Rs 4.5 lakh. Similarly, one year fee for administrative quota seats has been increased from Rs 12.5 lakh to Rs 13.5 lakh. In addition, the reservation fee for NRIs has also gone up. Last year it was Rs 23.5 lakh whereas in the current year it is Rs 24.5 lakh.

If the seats reserved for NRIs are not filled, they will be shifted to the general pool. The fee for such allotted seats has been fixed at Rs 21.5 lakh per annum. At present the fees fixed by the Fee Fixation Committee are Special Fee, Enrollment Fee, Tuition Fee, Sports Fee, Laboratory Fee etc.

Apart from these fees, private medical colleges are also allowed to deposit 40,000 per student towards the development fund. In addition, accommodation charges, transportation charges, meal charges are not included in the current rates. This will have to be paid separately. As a result, students have to pay up to one lakh annually in addition to the current fee.

There is a growing demand for college administrations to set up group insurance schemes for students. While academics and parents have expressed their views that the fees for medical courses are already high, the current fee rates have increased and students will now have to pay additional fees.

Two new private medical universities in Tamil Nadu are set to start this year. The government has earmarked Rs 5.4 lakh for private medical universities namely Thanalakshmi Srinivasan University and Venkateswara Medical College Hospital and Rs 16.2 lakh for administrative quota seats. The fee for NRIs has been fixed at Rs 29.4 lakh.
