Tamil Nadu rains: Flood warning in Chennai, other areas; NDRF team on standby

The Meteorological Department said that a cyclonic circulation is persisting over southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining South Andaman Sea which is extending up to mid-troposphere level.

Under its influence, a Low Pressure Area is very likely to form over southeast Bay of Bengal and neighborhood during next 24 hours.

It is very likely to move west-northwestwards, concentrate into a depression and reach north Tamil Nadu coast by the morning of November 11.

In view of this, the IMD warned of localized flooding of roads, flooding and waterlogging in low-lying areas and closure of underpasses, mainly in urban areas.

Local landslides, ‘kutcha’ roads, weak structures and minor damage to horticulture and standing crops are likely in some areas.

The IMD said this could lead to flooding of the river in some river catchment areas.

The water level in the reservoirs of Coimbatore has increased after heavy rains. The present water level in Sholair is 160.27 ft, while the height of the reservoir is 165 ft.

Further, Vellore district officials said that around 4,609 cusecs of water is being released from Ponnai Anaikut and people posted at Melpadi and Ponnai Causeway and police personnel have been put on alert in view of security.

Separately, the state government advised people living in low-lying areas in all the affected areas to move to the shelters provided by it. Additionally, nodal officers have been appointed in 15 zones in Chennai to review the situation.

Chief Minister MK Stalin Inspected the affected areas and provided flood relief assistance to the affected people at Royapuram.

Officials said that since Sunday afternoon, 2,02,350 people have been provided food in the affected areas.

On Monday morning, around 1,29,00 packets of Pongal and Ravkichadi prepared in the community kitchen were served to the people in the affected areas.

A civic agency release said that over two lakh packets of lunch were provided to the people, which included different types of rice like sambhar, lemon, brinjal, and tamarind. In all, 3,36,000 food packets were distributed.

Along with this, 200 special monsoon medical camps were also organized, in which 3,776 people got medical help.

NDRF, Municipal bodies relief work

NDRF DG SN Pradhan said on Monday that more than 20 teams would be deployed in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh in view of the prevailing flood situation.

“The first phase of Chennai rains is almost over. However, the IMD has predicted extreme rain for the next three days. Therefore, more than 20 teams of NDRF will be deployed in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.” ANI.

“We have deployed over 100 teams on standby across the country. If needed, airlifting can also be done but it is not expected. Three battalions of that location have been asked to coordinate as per the update.”

In addition, the Greater Chennai Corporation deployed 23,000 personnel to restore normalcy. It has also installed pump sets to remove accumulated water at 500 places.
