Chennai: First phase of elections for rural local bodies Kancheepuram And Chengalpet On Wednesday, there was a brisk turnout in the districts as voters stood in long queues to cast their votes. However, many voters, especially the elderly, faced difficulties in exercising their franchise by using ballot papers.
Though polling was overall peaceful, sporadic incidents of uproar were reported in some areas.
Complaints of bogus voting were received in Singadivakkam panchayat of Kancheepuram district. This came to light when Parvati of Mottur village went to cast her vote. He contested the election by filing Form 17B and exercised his democratic rights as per section 49(p) of the Election Conduct Rules 1961.
In Kalakattur VillageIn protest against the removal of 90 names from the voter list, a section of villagers tried to remove Lakshmi, the project officer of DRDA, from the road. He told the officials that he had voted in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and 2021 assembly elections. When asked how many names could be missing from the electoral rolls, the officials did not have a reply. Due to this the voting came to a standstill for nearly three hours. The villagers returned home without casting their votes.

A government teacher on election duty said on condition of anonymity that there were complaints of poor arrangements in many remote villages as there were no facilities like ramps and wheelchairs for people with disabilities to vote. Several government employees engaged in polling duty complained of poor arrangements at polling stations in remote areas.
Polling officials and a section of voters said that voting using ballot papers caused them a lot of inconvenience.
