Chennai:

A 20-year-old pregnant college student has been arrested for allegedly marrying her minor classmate in Tamil Nadu’s Salem district.

The juvenile, who was a minor when he went missing in April, was staying with the senior student. The police traced him after his parents filed a petition to bring him to the court.

Police said the girl will be sent for medical examination, she has been charged under the Protection of Children against Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act.

“A court has sent him to judicial custody,” said Salem City Police Commissioner Najmul Hoda.

In another incident, a 17-year-old boy was taken into custody for allegedly marrying a 16-year-old girl in Cuddalore district of the state.

She was detained after a video of her putting on mangalsutra (a necklace worn by married women) on a girl at a bus stand went viral. The police have registered a case under the POCSO Act and sent the boy to the observation home.

“The boy allegedly had sex with the girl. She will be medically examined,” police said.

Another person has been arrested by the police under the SC/ST Act for uploading the video on social media.
