Technology can play an important role in taking education to its last mile: VP Venkaiah Naidu

Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu on Saturday said technology can play a vital role in taking education to the last mile by overcoming barriers. He also called for “Indianisation” of the education system based on the country’s wealth of ancient knowledge and said that the colonial education system had created an inferiority complex and difference among the people.

Naidu said there is a need for value-based change in the education system, as envisaged in the National Policy on Education (NEP) 2020. Referring to the important role of technology in the democratization of education, he said that the untapped potential of the students can be harnessed. When education is taken to the last mile, it is used for a greater good.

According to a statement issued by the Vice President’s Secretariat, Naidu also emphasized the need for the country to emerge as a global hub of innovation, learning and intellectual leadership. Inaugurating Rishihood University here, Naidu recalled that India was once known as the “Vishwa Guru”.

“We had great institutions like Nalanda, Taxila and Pushpagiri, where students from all corners of the world came to learn,” he said. He said that the country should regain that pre-eminent place. Remembering that India has a proud tradition of holistic education. Urging new universities to take the lead in this regard, the Vice President called for reviving that tradition and transforming the educational landscape.

Observing that education plays an important role in the transformation of a nation, he called for taking education as a “mission”. Emphasizing on the need for all-round reforms on the education front, Naidu said that there is a need to strengthen research at all levels, quality of teaching, ranking by international agencies, employability of graduates and many other aspects of the education system.

He urged every educational institution in the country to implement NEP in letter and spirit. Former Union Minister and Chancellor of the University Suresh Prabhu was also present in this program.
