Telangana BJP chief and MP Bandi Sanjay, arrested today after being named by the Telangana police as the prime accused in a paper leak case, has been sent to judicial custody till April 19 along with three other accused.

Speaking on Sanjay’s arrest, his lawyer Karuna Sagar said, “We will initiate contempt proceedings against the investigating officer for violating the Supreme Court guidelines. We plan to challenge the order in the High Court tomorrow.” “

Bandi Sanjay Kumar was arrested by the police in the early hours of Wednesday after he was named the prime accused by the city police in a case of malpractice after question papers of Standard 10 (SSC) board exams surfaced on the groups of an instant messaging app.

Lok Sabha MP from Karimnagar constituency Sanjay Kumar was picked up by a police team from his residence in Karimnagar town and initially placed under preventive arrest, following which his party workers protested.

He was later arrested and then produced before a local court in Warangal in the evening, which sent him along with three others to judicial custody till April 19.

The Standard 10 (SSC) board exam paper in Telangana found its way into an instant messaging platform for the second day on Tuesday after a 16-year-old boy took a photo of the paper from a student who appeared for the exam in Hanumakonda district. Police said that the exam was going on and shared it with the brother of that student.

Police said the paper was posted in a group on the instant messaging app and later shared in other groups by one of the accused, who also sent a copy to Sanjay Kumar.

“There was a WhatsApp conversation between Sanjay and the second accused (a former journalist of a TV channel). There were also WhatsApp calls between them. When we asked Sanjay, he said that he does not have his phone with him. If we check his phone, some more information will come to the fore.

“We think they wanted to create a feeling of insecurity among the students. There is no political motive in registering the case. This (leak of papers) was done under the direction of Bandi Sanjay,” he said.

The SSC examination in the state started from Monday.
