Telangana’s ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) on Wednesday changed its name to ‘Bharat Rashtra Samithi’ (BRS), marking the party’s foray into national politics.

Party sources said that a resolution to this effect was passed in the general body meeting of the party here. Party President and Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao read out the resolution and announced that the party’s general body meeting unanimously resolved to change the name from TRS to BRS.

TRS workers gathered outside the party headquarters here immediately after the announcement was engulfed in celebration.

Slogans of “Desh ke leader KCR” were echoing and similar slogans were seen in the posters.

Sources said the first public meeting of the new party would be held on December 9 in New Delhi with a huge public meeting.

Mr Rao informed his cabinet colleagues on Sunday that his visits to other states have generated great interest among the local population. They were eager to see a replica of welfare schemes like the Rythu Bandhu in Telangana and 24-hour electricity for agriculture in their own states. This will in no way dilute the implementation of the schemes in Telangana.

JD(S) leader and former Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy and VCK leader Thol. Thirumavalavan met Sri Rao earlier in the day.
