Telangana village adjudged as one of the ‘Best Tourism Villages’ by United Nations

Telangana’s Pochampally village was on Tuesday adjudged as one of the best tourism villages by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).

The prestigious award will be presented on the sidelines of the 24th session of the UNWTO General Assembly in Madrid, Spain on December 2, 2021.

Union Minister of Culture, Tourism and Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) G Kishan Reddy congratulated the people of the village and said, “The unique weaving style and pattern of Pochampally received special attention through Prime Minister Narendra Modi. mantra As a part of ‘Vocal for Local’ Atmanirbhar Bharat,

“On behalf of the people of Pochampally and the people of Telangana in particular, I am grateful that this award has been given to the village of Pochampally. I am also grateful to the officials of the Ministry for effectively presenting the case of Pochampally and other entries. ,” added the minister.

The ‘Best Tourism Villages’ by UNWTO pilot initiative aims to reward villages that are outstanding examples of rural destinations and demonstrate good practices in line with its designated nine assessment areas.

It aims to help enhance rural tourism potential of villages through access to training and improvement opportunities.

Ministry of Tourism recommends three villages from India for UNWTO Best Tourism Village Entry. These were Kongthong in Meghalaya, Ladhpura Khas in Madhya Pradesh and Pochampally in Telangana. Pochampally was honored by the UNWTO.

Pochampally, 50 km from Hyderabad, is a town in the Nalgonda district of Telangana and is often referred to as the ‘Silk City of India’ for the exquisite sarees woven through the unique style called ikat.

Pochampally Ikat, this style received a Geographical Indication (GI status) in 2004.
