Erik ten Haag has urged his players to create a legacy at Manchester United as the Dutch manager prepares to walk out of Wembley for the first time in Sunday’s League Cup final.

United are aiming to end a six-year wait for silverware against Newcastle, who are in the League Cup final for the first time in 47 years.

Ten Haag’s men are looking for four trophies in their first season in charge.

The Red Devils saw off Barcelona in a blockbuster tie on Thursday to reach the last 16 of the Europa League, face West Ham in the FA Cup fifth round and remain third in the Premier League, eight points behind leaders Arsenal.

,[When] You’re playing for Manchester United and you have to build your legacy, so you have to win trophies,” Ten Haag said.

“We are in a good direction and on Sunday we have the opportunity to win the trophy.

“But after Sunday it goes on, we’re still in league three [competitions] Where we still have good chances to win something.”

A sellout crowd of 90,000 will descend on the home of English football, with both sets of fans cheering after spells of varying lengths.

Newcastle have not won a major trophy for 54 years but are on the rise in their first full season under the ownership of the Saudi Sovereign Wealth Fund.

Ten Haag admitted that he had never been to Wembley before and was looking forward to the showpiece opportunity.

“I haven’t had the opportunity to experience just being at Wembley [on] television,” he said. “I’m looking forward [to] A great pleasure.”
