A large number of police personnel have been deployed in two coastal villages of Puducherry after police opened fire twice in the air after a clash between fishermen to control the situation on Saturday.

The residents of Nallavadu and Virampatnam clashed with each other over the use of restricted fishing nets, which could adversely affect the fish and marine populations on which they depend for their livelihood.

Videos of villagers firing with sticks and police have been shared widely on social media.

Police said shots were fired in the air to control the situation.

Speaking to NDTV, Ms. Pratiksha Godara, SSP, Law and Order, said: “The situation is under control now. No arrests have been made yet. We will definitely take legal action. Fire only to restore order.” was opened”.

Fishermen from Virampatnam recently met Chief Minister N Rangasamy and lodged their protest against the use of banned fishing nets by their counterparts in Nallavadu, who they alleged had the support of BJP MLA and Speaker R Selvam .

Sri Rangasamy’s NR Congress is running the government in Puducherry along with the BJP.
