Tesla recalls electric semi-truck months after launch over ‘rollaway’ risk

Elon Musk-led Tesla has issued a recall for the Tesla semi-truck just months after it was introduced. The recall has been issued to correct a potential rollaway risk associated with a failed emergency brake. According to the recall files published on the website of the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 35 lorry trucks were involved. The lorry trucks were first delivered by the electric vehicle maker in December.

In February this year, American automobile company Bendix, which supplies the truck, was found to have a defect in the electronic parking brake valve module. The defect exposed drivers to “rollaway” phenomena, increasing the likelihood of an accident.

According to a recall notice, the faulty modules “may fail to go into the park position when the parking brake is activated” causing drivers to be unaware that their semi trucks may be rolling, the report said. However, there was no accident or any damage due to the parking brake component defect, the report said.

In a filing on the NHTSA site, Tesla said it would “replace the parking brake valve module with a modified part with modified internals that prevents air leaks and allows the driver to apply and disengage the parking brake”. Last year, Tesla recalled more than 3,21,000 vehicles due to software glitches. The recall includes certain 2023 Model 3 vehicles and 2020 to 2023 Model Y vehicles.
