Thailand Open: PV Sindhu reaches quarter-finals, Kidambi Srikanth out

Former world champion PV Sindhu advanced to the women’s singles quarterfinals of the Thailand Open 2022, while World Championships silver medalist Kidambi Srikanth crashed out of the round of 16 on Thursday.

Sixth seed Sindhu took 37 minutes to beat South Korea’s No. 46 Sim Yoo Jin 21-16, 21-13 in the round of 16 at the Impact Arena.

Both Sindhu and her Korean rival matched the intensity in the opening exchange of the first game and were tied at 5-all. The Indian ace, however, took the lead in the proceedings after scoring nine out of 10 points and won the game with ease.

The 26-year-old cemented her grip on the match in the second game itself and sealed her place in the quarter-finals of the Thailand Open. This is Sindhu’s second win over Sim You Jin in as many matches. She came from behind to defeat the South Korean shuttler in three matches at the Indonesia Open last year.

Sindhu, India’s only remaining challenger in the BWF Super 500 tournament, will next take on world number one Akane Yamaguchi of Japan in the quarterfinals on Friday. Sindhu’s one-off record against Yamaguchi is 13-9, while the Indian shuttler lost to the Japanese in the semi-finals of the Badminton Asia Championships last month.

Earlier in the day, Kidambi Srikanth withdrew from his round of 16 match against Nhat Nguyen of Ireland. The reason for their withdrawal is not yet known.

Meanwhile, upcoming Indian shuttler Malvika Bansod lost to world number 22 Rekha Kristofferson of Denmark 21-16, 14-21, 14, 21. The women’s doubles pair of Ashwini Bhat K-Shikha Gautam lost 19-21, 6-21. Time’s world champion Mayu Matsumoto and Japan’s Wakana Nagahara.

On the other hand, Ishaan Bhatnagar and Tanisha Crasto lost 19-21, 20-22 to Goh SH and Lai SJ in the mixed doubles pre-quarterfinals.

HS Prannoy, along with Olympic bronze medalist Saina Nehwal in women’s singles and world bronze medalist B Sai Praneeth in men’s singles, crashed out of the Thailand Open in the first round. The Thailand Open badminton tournament will conclude on Sunday.
