A 29-year-old man from Diva was allegedly duped by an online scammer who paid double the amount to get him a high-end phone, police informed on Sunday.

According to the Mumbra police, the incident took place in May when the complainant, Satish Sutarione who works in a finance company GhatkoparShe received a message on her social networking account from an unknown person, promising her to get a high-end phone from a reputed brand at a competitive rate.
The complainant fell for the advertisement and approached the accused, who reportedly told him that the sourcing of the gadget might be delayed as there was a high demand but later assured to receive it on time once the payment was made. Officials said they later insisted on some paperwork, including some approvals, that needed to be done before the gadget could be acquired.
“The accused had sent a QR code to the victim’s phone and asked him to scan and remit the money through online mode, which was done by the victim. However, later the accused asked for some more money, after which he took a loan from his brother. Without thinking, the victim collectively paid a total of Rs 3.2 lakh to the accused, even though the market value of the gadget does not exceed Rs 1.5 lakh. However, a few days after he failed to get the gadget and the accused was also untraceable, the victim realized that he had been tricked and approached the police,” said a police officer.
Police have registered a case against unknown accused under relevant sections IT Act and Indian Penal Code and are investigating the matter. “We are appealing residents not to fall for such scams online and have warned to trace the credentials of individuals before getting into any monetary transaction,” the inspector said.
