The combined storage of reservoirs is 200 tmc ft. heading towards

On Wednesday, it was 199.165 tmc ft, which represents 89% of the capacity of 90 reservoirs

The combined storage of reservoirs in the state is approaching 200 thousand million cubic feet (tmc feet). On Wednesday it was 199.165 TMC ft, which is 89% of the capacity of 90 reservoirs.

Last year on the same day, the figure stood at around 140 TMC ft, which was 63% of their capacity. The total capacity of reservoirs in the state is 224.297 TMC ft.

Of the existing storage, three reservoirs in the Cauvery basin – Mettur, Bhavanisagar and Amaravati – account for two-thirds with 126.827 tmc ft, including 91.883 tmc ft at Mettur, 31.131 tmc ft at Bhavanisagar and 3.8 tmc ft. in Amravati. All three are almost full.

For the Parambikulam group of reservoirs, the four major reservoirs – Parambikulam, Aliyar, Sholayar and Thirumurthy – have very comfortable storage. Barring Thirumurthy, which has about 87 per cent of the storage capacity, the other three are virtually full.

With respect to the Mullaperiyar-Vaigai network, the storage of the former is 6.8 TMC ft, which is about 89% of the permitted storage of 7.67 TMC ft. The latter storage is 5.639 tmc ft, which is equivalent to 93% of its capacity. The two major reservoirs of Kanyakumari – Pechiparai and Perunchani – have a storage of about 85%.

In the northern districts of the state, the region’s largest reservoir, the Sathanur, is an outlier, whose storage is not touching even half of its capacity. The reservoir storage is 3.392 TMC ft, which is about 46% of its capacity. Veeranam, a historic tank in Cuddalore district, has a storage of 0.892 TMC ft, which is about 61% of its capacity.

With respect to the reservoirs that supply water to Chennai, their levels have been lowered in anticipation of further floods. As a result, their combined storage varies from 73% to 83%.

As far as the state’s recovery of Cauvery water is concerned, the total recovery since June 1 has crossed the 150 tmc ft mark. Till Monday (November 8), it was around 151.64 tmc ft, which was 4.6 tmc ft higher than the state’s share for the past period.
