The Dalai Lama’s Four Step Guide to Finding Sublime and Long-lasting Happiness

In the words of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, happiness is a state of satisfaction, which is beyond material pleasures. “It is a neutral experience, which can bring deep satisfaction. Happiness is peace of mind. It is also warm-heartedness, which reduces ill-will towards others. It also reduces mistrust, and increases openness,” The Dalai Lama says

Here is His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s four-step guide to everlasting happiness.

Step 1: Leave the Labels

Never consider yourself different from another human being. “I never consider myself a ‘Buddhist’, or His Holiness the Dalai Lama, or a Nobel laureate,” says the Dalai Lama. He says that the moment he defines himself by these labels, he becomes a prisoner. “I forget all these things, I just consider myself one of seven billion human beings,” he adds.

Step 2: Don’t Give Up Hope:

His Holiness says that the purpose of our lives is happiness. We don’t know what will happen in the future, so we can only hope. No matter how full of difficulties the present moment may be, our life will continue with hope. If one completely loses hope, the same mental attitude shortens his life.

Step 3: Go Beyond Materialistic Happiness

On a materialistic level, happiness is merely sensory – seeing something good, listening to beautiful music, or tasting something good. Such happiness is short-lived. Long lasting happiness should be developed on a mental level. As long as you can see your feelings and thoughts come and go, and you don’t think about them for who you are, and you can find peace within yourself, you can be happy.

Step 4: Be Grateful and Kind

His Holiness says that every day when one wakes up one should think that they have a precious human life and should not waste it. People should always consider how lucky they are to have the life they lead and treat others with kindness.
