The Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examinations began on March 28 across Karnataka. Around 8.73 lakh students have enrolled for the examinations to be completed on April 11.

The hijab row is at the center of this year’s exams. The Karnataka government had clearly stated that all students should take the exam without hijab wearing their school uniform.

Students across Karnataka followed the dress code. In many schools, including Bengaluru, students were allotted a room to remove their hijab before entering the examination hall. Students remove the hijab where it is not part of the school’s dress code. In the case of schools where the hijab is a part of the uniform, the students appeared for the examination wearing the dress.

Udupi, Dakshina Kannada

The examination was conducted smoothly in Udupi district, which was the center of the hijab controversy. Udupi Deputy Commissioner M. Kurma Rao told that the students followed the school dress code while giving the paper Hindu,

A total of 29,712 students are appearing for SSLC exam in 99 centers in Dakshina Kannada, while 14,022 students are appearing in 58 centers in Udupi district.

Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner KV Rajendra had issued a circular on the evening of March 27, reiterating that students of government schools should come to the examination center in the dress prescribed by the school. The list of schools which have hijab in their uniform should be made available at the examination centers by the concerned Block Education Officer. Teachers and education officials at these centers were asked to verify the names of such students and allow them to appear in the examination wearing a hijab.

Accordingly, Muslim girls from aided and unaided schools were allowed to appear in Karnataka Public School in Montepadavu in Bantwal taluk of Dakshina Kannada. It is one of the examination centers in the taluk with a mix of students from schools that do not have hijab as part of the uniform and which allow apparel as part of the uniform. A total of 325 candidates reached the examination center.

Dakshina Kannada district in Bantwal taluk has the largest number of Muslim students taking the exam.

Hasan

Chaos and tension prevailed for some time at Mary Immaculate Girls High School in Shivamogga as bees attacked some parents who had gone to school to drop their children for SSLC exams.

Some parents suffered bee stings, even as the teaching staff ensured that students come inside the classrooms. Parents and journalists who were bitten by bees were later taken to Mac Gunn Hospital for treatment.

In Hassan, many Muslim girl students took off their hijab and entered the examination hall. The education department had set aside a room in each center for girls to remove their hijab.

KS Prakash of DDPI said that in all the 94 centers where examinations were being held, a room was earmarked for girls to remove the hijab. “As per the guidelines of the Government of Karnataka, no one wearing a hijab should be allowed inside the examination hall. Every student is following the guidelines.”

More than 20,900 students are taking the exam in the district.

As per the information provided by the Karnataka Board of Secondary Education Examination, the examinations are being conducted at more than 3,440 examination centres. All the centers have CCTV cameras.
